She has a beautiful jumping form and impresses all of the judges. In her spare time, she enjoys running poles and barrels. She has even taken several blue ribbons from the “big guys!” Scroll down to meet Mezzie’s brother – Ace!

Dakota

Barn Name: Kota
Gender: Mare
Breed: Welsh Pony / Paint
Height: 14.2 hh
Birth Year:
2001

This girl is one of the sweetest horses you will ever meet. Kota’s original owners were not kind to her and she suffered from physical and emotional trauma before we rescued her in 2014. It took some time, but after restoring her health and gaining her trust, Kota has blossomed into a sweet and loving pony! Kota loves her new job at Daystar and is always the favorite pony at pony rides because of her gorgeous colors. She is excelling in the new sport of Western Dressage and is loving life now!

Akai

Barn Name: Akai
Gender: Gelding
Breed: Mustang
Height: 15.2 hh
Birth Year:
2003

Akai is an American Mustang who was born in Nevada in 2003. He was gathered by the Bureau of Land Management as a yearling, and was then placed in an adoptive home. Several years later, he was returned to the BLM due to some abuse and neglect. He was re-adopted by a therapeutic riding program, and then sold to Dr. Laurie Sakaeda, PhD, who utilized him in her Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy program (A Helping Hoof) for PTSD veterans. He was with A Helping Hoof for about 7 years, until he met one of our instructors, Katie Johnson, when she interned with the program during the summer of 2015.  Dr. Laurie graciously gave Akai to Katie in July 2016, after she completed her second summer internship with A Helping Hoof. Akai has a very sensitive personality, requiring a lot of time and patience to be spent gaining his trust and making him a bit of a challenge to ride. On the ground, he is excellent to use for various exercises as his sensitivity teaches clients about varying degrees of pressure and release, as well as developing trust and soft communication with a horse.

Baby J

Barn Name: Baby J
Gender: Mare
Breed: American Quarter Horse
Height: 15.2 hh
Birth Year:
2004

Baby J is such a sweetheart. She is the most laid back horse in Daystar’s herd. Her calm personality and her striking colors make her a first pick for younger children – especially if they are nervous. We like to think of Baby J as our “babysitter” because we can put any kid on her and we know she will take care of them! Baby J is owned by Dan Briggs (one of our wonderful property caretakers) and came with the property when we arrived in December of 2016. Dan has graciously allowed us to use her for Daystar events and riding lessons. We love Baby J and are grateful to Dan for letting us work with his sweet mare.

Lucy

Barn Name: Lucy
Gender: Mare
Breed: American Quarter Horse
Height: 15 hh
Birth Year:
2004

Lucy is a beautiful blue roan and is built like a tank! This strong mare has been with Daystar since December of 2016. Like Baby J, Lucy came with the property. She is owned by Ed Struckman (our fantastic landlord!) who has also graciously allowed us to use Lucy for Daystar programs. Lucy is a fantastic trail horse and will cross anything without hesitation. She also excels in Western Dressage and has a great work ethic.

ML Messenger

Barn Name: Ivan
Gender: Gelding
Breed: Egyptian Arabian
Height: 14.2 hh
Birth Year:
2004

This handsome fellow is one of a kind. Ivan has a heart of gold and has the best work ethic! He loves to please people and is the first one to the gate everyday. He is a talented Dressage horse and has won many blue ribbons at schooling and recognized shows. He is also one of those rare Arabians who can actually jump! Cross country always gets this guy excited and he loves a good, long trail ride. Ivan does not let his success keep him from being a wonderful schooling horse who loves to give riding lessons and pony rides. Such a good guy all-round!

Buckwheat

Barn Name: Buck
Gender: Wether
Breed: Nubian Goat
Birth Year:
2013

Buckwheat and his half brother Alfalfa are our lawn maintenance crew! Together they keep all the weeds down and keep our fence lines clear! We raised Buckwheat from just eight weeks old. He is a big sweetheart and loves people. When he isn’t on lawn duty, he loves to hang out with kids and locate the treats!

Alfalfa

Barn Name: Alfie
Gender: Wether
Breed: Nubian Goat
Birth Year:
2014

Alfalfa is the life of the party! He is an “in your pocket” kind of goat. But watch out, this 200lb goat will steal your heart, hugs, and cuddles! He is always starving for attention. Like his half brother, Buckwheat, he is a great property caretaker and fence line trimmer. We call these two goats our “Little Rascals!”

Kenobi

Barn Name: Obi
Gender: Female
Breed: German Shepherd / Pitbull
Birthday:
September 5th, 2016

Kenobi was originally from Kentucky where she was rescued from a bad situation. The parvo disease took her five brothers and almost killed this poor pooch too. But! She pulled through! Hope Notz adopted her on January 1st and…. she promptly fell down the stairs and broke her leg four days later. Four months in a cast later, she was back in action! It is safe to say this pup has been through a lot! She has made a full recovery from everything and is now loving life. Her size and striking features make her look fearsome, but she’s really just a gentle giant. She loves attention and loves to play. She is happy she has found her forever home at Daystar!
